IN THIS ISSUE
If you’d told 16-year-old me where I would be today, I wouldn’t have believed you. I’m not rich, I’m not famous, but I’m alive and happy – something I never thought I would achieve.

In the 17th century, during Oliver Cromwell’s brief Puritan rule, he attempted to ban the singing of Christmas carols. In modern day Britain this would be unimaginable, the kind of thing we might expect to happen in North Korea. But when you think about those incessant Christmas songs that seriously get on our nerves, it’s not actually that difficult to imagine many in the UK welcoming such a ban!

They want a price. You want a meeting. Well, really what you want is the booking, right? It’s kind of an adversarial start because you both want something different. What we should avoid is splurging what we do, regurgitating everything that we offer in the hope that SOMETHING will resonate with them and lead to a sale. In 2023, the oldest members of Gen Z will be turning 26. Let that sink in for a second. Gen Z is growing up; no longer just the ‘kids’ raised in a purely digital world, they’re the young adults driving change in the 2020s.

Paul Dakeyne holds a strong history and legacy as an international DJ, producer and innovative studio technician. He gained global success in 1994 with his dance classic ‘Eighteen Strings’ under the guise of Tinman, and has DJed for the likes of U2, Kraftwerk, BBC Essential Mix and the Ministry of Sound.

I’ve avoided the subject all year but there’s no hiding from it. As Noddy Holder once said: “It’s Christmas!” Or at least it will be in just a few short weeks when the festive season really kicks in for DJs everywhere. And as sure as night follows day, there is a lot of debate as to what tracks to play.
