Attention grabbing headlines are one thing, but the truth is that prices are going up. So, what can you do to ensure you and your business survive the winter while others hang up their headphones? A positive approach is key to this situation.
How much fuel do you actually use for a typical booking?
Petrol and diesel prices have hit close to double what they were just over two years ago. Quite a shocking statement. However, Whatcar.com suggests the average transit van achieves around 40mpg, whilst at its height this year a gallon of diesel was just under £10.
So I’m now spending around £10 on fuel per typical booking compared to £5 just over two years ago. Of course, there are other factors to consider, like the weight of your gear and your driving style, but we can calmly extinguish that fire when we break down the numbers.
When was the last time you audited all your direct debits?
At a domestic level there is the increase in food costs. Latest figures suggest the typical weekly grocery shop has gone up by 14%. Again, on the surface it seems like quite a big deal.
Now let's look at the reality of the situation. For most households, this equates to about £10 per week. How much of your typical monthly household income goes towards grocery shopping? Based on average household income (2021 statistics suggest around £300 per month), the increased cost is equivalent to around 1.5%. Most of us probably spend more than that on subscriptions we no longer use.
