Programming music during all parts of any event is something that DJs have embraced and take more seriously than ever. Why should a Christmas party be any different? So, what music do you play? Ultimately, it’s down to you; the skill of creating the perfect soundtrack is part of what we do. Selecting the right music as guests arrive and creating a playlist during food service, before building the energy ahead of the main party, are all skills that shouldn’t be underestimated.

A mix of classic and modern festive tracks will allow you to create a playlist that keeps everyone happy. Whilst adding other non-Christmas songs is essential, they should all work together to create the right vibe for each party. Some audiences will be older, some younger, some mixed – it’s always a tough gig but these are the events that test your DJ skills.

Some DJs stick with the classics. Tracks like ‘Merry Xmas Everybody’ (Slade), ‘All I Want For Christmas (Is You)’ (Mariah Carey), ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ (Shakin’ Stevens) and of course ‘Fairytale Of New York’ (the Pogues & Kirsty MacColl) are almost guaranteed to be played at every Christmas party. Other tracks that are always popular include ‘Last Christmas’ (Wham!) and ‘I Wish it Could Be Christmas Everyday’ (Wizzard). These are the types of classic Christmas tracks that find their way into most DJ's main sets.

There are some excellent modern Christmas tracks that can be added to your music sets too. Artists including Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Little Mix have all recorded great festive tracks that can be used to create exciting sets and keep things interesting throughout the festive party season.

I see numerous social media posts that focus on having to play the same songs night after night, or asking which version of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ to play. Unfortunately, some songs are hard to avoid but there are plenty of options for other music choices. Get creative and mix it up a little. Add some new music content to your library and take a little time to research some different songs. Trust me, it will pay off in the end!

Finally, I wanted to say: enjoy the forthcoming festive party season. Take a deep breath… you can do this! And when it comes to music solutions, Mastermix has got your back. Merry Christmas Everyone!
