At first my reaction was this was a little over the top and unlikely to happen. I mean, how many times have you heard a wedding DJ on the radio or seen on TV talking about our industry? Well, back in May I found myself surprised when I took a call from BBC Radio Kent. They wanted a wedding DJ to come on and talk about wedding speeches.

Working in PR I was cynical about why they’d asked me but it was a genuine feature planned as the show’s producer had been tasked with writing a speech.

With a background in PR I am no stranger to interviews and have done quite a few over the years. And on much thornier topics too where I’ve been defending National Highways! So I felt well placed to do the interview. With everything in place, I dialled in and provided my advice alongside an academic from the University of Kent.

f you’re ever approached by the media or tempted to reach out, here are my top tips when considering an interview:

Ask who else will be interviewed and what the background is (ie why are they doing it?)
Plan your key takeaways; what do you want people to do or think after you’ve finished
Test the technology in advance and make sure you know how to use it
