What many people don’t realise is that AI is already deeply ingrained into our society, especially online. We’ve become accustomed to things like Google search, Netflix recommendations, virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa, and the ability to translate speech with our smartphones. These are all examples of AI in use.

But as technology advances, many are quick to predict the downfall of certain industries. In the music world, some believe that AI will soon replace DJs. They argue that AI will be able to create better playlists than DJs do, rendering us obsolete.

In reality, this couldn't be further from the truth, because it overlooks the fact that DJing is not just about playing music, but also about reading a crowd and creating a unique experience. AI may be able to analyse data and make song suggestions, but it cannot replace what a skilled DJ brings to a performance.

Instead, we need to use AI to our advantage. It’s the DJs who embrace AI who will thrive in the industry, while those who resist it will be left behind.

Why you should explore and implement AI in your DJ work

As a DJ, it's important to stay ahead of the curve and explore new technologies that can help you run your business more efficiently and reach more potential clients. AI is one such technology with the potential to revolutionise the way DJs operate. By implementing AI in your practice, you can increase your efficiency, improve your marketing, and provide better customer service.

It's also worth noting that AI is becoming more and more prevalent in the music industry, and DJs who are not familiar with it may be at a disadvantage. By embracing AI, you can gain a competitive edge and stand out in a crowded market. There are a few main ways I feel DJs can use AI to their advantage.

One way is by trying out various DJ software and apps that utilise AI for music selection, such as djay, Algoriddim, and Mixed in Key. These apps can help you analyse audience preferences and generate song suggestions, so you can create unique and personalised playlists based on your audience's tastes and the event's theme.
Another way to implement AI is by using it to automate tasks such as scheduling, budgeting, and vendor communication. This can help DJs save time and reduce the chance of human error, while also giving you more time to focus on your performance and the satisfaction of your guests.

Finally, AI can help you fine-tune your email, social media and targeted marketing campaigns. For example, if you have room in your marketing budget for targeted advertising, AI will help you reach potential clients for less money by analysing data on customer behaviour and predicting future trends.

Let’s look at each of these areas in a little more depth.

Using AI to analyse audience preferences and suggest songs to play

There are already several ways that AI can analyse audience preferences and suggest songs to play.

Music streaming platforms use machine learning algorithms to analyse the past behaviour and preferences of listeners – something we’ve probably all experienced with Spotify or Apple Music. This data is then used to suggest similar songs to those that the listener has previously enjoyed.

Another way AI can be used to analyse audience preferences is through the use of real-time data. For example, a mobile DJ could use an AI-powered app that tracks which songs are getting the most positive reactions from the audience in real-time. You could then use this information to adjust the playlist, ensuring that you play music that continues to resonate with the audience. You can also use AI to analyse audience demographics, such as age, gender and location. AI can then use this information to suggest songs that are popular among specific demographics, allowing you to tailor the music selection to a specific audience.

So, how can this improve the overall experience for customers and increase repeat business?

Simply put, AI ensures that you’re providing the best possible music experience for your audience. And this ultimately leads to increased repeat business and customer satisfaction.
When the music is tailored to their tastes, the audience is more likely to enjoy their night and less likely to get bored, which creates a better atmosphere and overall experience. By tracking audience reactions in real-time, you can adjust your playlist as you go and provide a dynamic, ever-changing musical experience for your guests.

Meanwhile, analysing audience demographics will help you tailor your music selection, letting you create a more inclusive, diverse and ultimately satisfying music experience for all your customers. And if you notice certain songs or genres work well with certain demographics, you can factor that into your future playlists.
